About

Welcome to Black History Album (“The Way We Were”) …..a photo gallery that chronicles how Black America lived, loved, worked celebrated, worshipped and more, from the end of slavery in the 1860′s to the black power movement of the 1960′s.
We launched the site in early 2009 to share with the world some of the treasures that we’ve uncovered as a result of our 20 year long obsession with collecting old historical photographs and images. The hand picked images found on this site are derived from various sources, including old family albums, antique shops, second-hand stores, auctions, garage sales, vintage books and publications, as well as government archives.
If you’re searching for hard to find images, or you simply enjoy peering into the past, we invite you to browse our selection. If you don’t see anything of interest today, be sure to bookmark us and check back often. This site will remain a “work in progress” since we’re always discovering fabulous, original photos, postcards and other paper collectibles. And we’ll be selectively adding these new items as we go along.
